SPRING AWAKENING BREAKS THEATRE BARRIERS THIS JULY
The winner of 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, is coming to RAPA in July. Spring Awakening explores the journey of a group of teens from adolescence to adulthood with poignancy and passion that is both illuminating and unforgettable. OFC Creations and RAPA, in partnership with the LGBT Giving Circle and the Gay Alliance, bring Rochester audiences this landmark musical, an electrifying fusion of morality, sexuality and rock & roll. Spring Awakening has been engaging audiences across the nation as no other musical has in years.
Director & Producer Eric Vaughn Johnson, along with music director, Bob Dietch, and choreographer Mandi Lynn Gurell, are thrilled to be bringing Rochester audiences this celebration of youthful rebellion, featuring performers of all ages and types, and a pop-rock score that will awaken the teenager in all of us. Based on Frank Wedekind’s groundbreaking and controversial play (once banned in Germany), Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik’s brilliant rock score and searingly emotional book take the story of sexual awakening, youth revolt, and self-discovery into a new century.
It is Germany in 1891. Teens are curious and adults are rigid and restrictive. Impulsive and reckless Melchior (Jimmy Boorum) meets naive Wendla (Emily Putnam). They soon fall into each others’ arms, passionate and curious; while anxious Moritz (John Connor) struggles to live up society’s expectations for him. Since they can’t talk to the grown-ups, they learn only from one another. The young men and women discover their bodies, their minds, and themselves along the way. Spring Awakening fuses issues of morality, sexuality, and rock and roll into a story that packs a powerful emotional punch.
Performances will take place at The Kodak Center for Performing Arts and will serve as a fundraiser for Broadway Cares: Equity Fights Aids. In order that the audience can be an intimate part of the experience, the show will be set in the round with audience members on more than one side. Seating will be general admission. Two of the performances will have post-show talk backs with select cast members, crew members, and representatives from the Gay Alliance.
Please Note: Spring Awakening is recommended for mature audiences only as it contains adult themes and brief nudity.
